Blue Flag

This year’s Blue Flag beaches has been updated with stricter rules for inclusion. Arrifana and Monte Clerigo retain their Blue Flag status which is excellent news for the Aljezur region. The Algarve as a whole, despite the new regulations, has maintained the same number of Blue Flags this year (69 beaches and 4 marinas), whilst other beaches throughout Europe have lost theirs.

According to the Blue Flag website, “beaches are awarded the Blue Flag based on compliance with 32 criteria covering the following:

1) Environmental Education and Information

2) Water Quality

3) Environmental Management

4) Safety and Services

All Blue Flags are awarded for one season at a time.

If the criteria are not fulfilled during the season or the conditions change, the Blue Flag may be withdrawn.”
